I left Ann Arbor my junior year to spend a semester working and studying in the Nation's Capital. My days were spent interning with The National Consumer Voice for Quality Long-Term Care, a policy and advocacy organization that does great work on behalf of the many individuals requiring long-term care services and supports. The projects I worked on there inspired my research paper, a requirement of the Michigan in Washington program.
I wrote about nursing facility staffing levels, specifically about how staffing levels are reported and monitored. Though the paper was very academic in nature, I used case studies of Vermont and Texas to illustrate points. Additionally, I presented my research to the class using a handout (see below) that includes pictures of the states used for the case study portion of the paper. While the piece below includes math, data tables, and scientific writing, it is evident there are creative and visual aspects as well. Additionally, the issue was salient to me due to my work with The Consumer Voice, where I was able to present similar information using web formats, social media, and infographics.
